wazuka, Kyoto, Japan

Traced by the Wazuka River and cradled by steep terraced tea fields, Wazuka is one of Kyoto’s most revered tea-growing regions. The area’s mountainous terrain, significant day-to-night temperature variation, frequent mist, and mineral-rich soil create ideal conditions for growing high-quality tea. The significance of the Wazuka River lies in its vital role in regulating humidity and supporting healthy soil, which in turn contributes to slow-leaf development and concentrated flavor.

Tea cultivation in Wazuka dates back centuries and has shaped the way tea is grown, with carefully tended fields, shaded leaves, and a deep respect for the land.
